On January 26th the world lost one of the most talented basketball players to ever play for the NBA. On the 26th a helicopter carrying nine passengers including Kobe Bryant and his thirteen year old daughter, Gianna, crash landed on their way to a basketball tournament at the Mamba Sports Academy.
The other 7 victims were John and Keri Altobelli and their daughter Alyssa, mother and daughter Sara and Payton Chester, basketball coach Christina Mauser and pilot Ara Zobayan.
Kobe Bryant was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers for 20 years, he joined when he was just 18 and retired in 2016 after twenty years.
Bryant was an 18- time All-star, 15-time member of the All-NBA team and 12-time member of the All-Defensive teams.
Not only was Kobe a star basketball player he was a loving family man and a philanthropist. Kobe was the father to four daughters, Natalia (17), Gianna (13), Bianka (3) and Capri (7 months). He’ll also be missed by his loving wife Vanessa Bryant who he was married to for 19 years.
Bryant and wife founded the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation. The foundation was created to help the less fortunate and homeless youth in Los Angeles. The KVBF provides scholarships and also operates Mamba FC, a youth soccer club.
Bryant also donated at least a million dollars to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
He also was a big supporter of his teammates and friends. Kobe frequently donated to his Lamar Odom, a fellow Lakers, charity “Kathy’s Kids.”
Kobe also donated numerous books to Lebron James’ I promise school. The school was created for underprivileged children. A lot of these children were at risk of not graduating and with Lebron’s school many are back on the path towards success.
On the Sunday Kobe and his daughter passed, every NBA game across the country held a moment of silence for them and Kobe’s name was being chanted in every stadium.
Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, retired the number twenty four in memory and honor of Kobe.
The UCONN women’s basketball team laid out a jersey for Gianna during their game against East Carolina.
The loss of Kobe, Gianna and the other seven people on board of the plane was a tragic event that will never be forgotten.
