Miss Murphy: Languages and Learning

At the heart of education, innovation and new ideas thrive. Wyoming Valley West welcomed a new Spanish teacher, Miss Murphy, who is already making an impact by blending modern teaching techniques with age-old values of empathy and respect. Her approach is to teach Spanish with a promise to change the way students connect with the curriculum.

“Establishing a class routine on the first day of school is so important,” Miss Murphy said. She believes that having structure helps students feel comfortable and ready to learn. However, she admits that teaching is not always easy. “The first year is the hardest, but I know it will get better,” Miss Murphy said.

As a language teacher, Miss Murphy is passionate about helping people who are not fluent in the English language. She is working hard to help her students understand Spanish and also has created opportunities for her ESL students in the past and will create more in the future.

“I would help find training jobs and English classes for ESL students. I even worked with local organizations to establish free ESL classes for students in need of help discover the power of learning another language,” Miss Murphy said.

For her, teaching a language is not just about learning words but also about giving students new opportunities. “In teaching, a language is opening a door to a new world for students. A new language is a new beginning as a teacher, a chance to teach an entirely new concept,” Miss Murphy added, reflecting on how her role helps both her and her students grow.

WVW high school is excited to welcome this dedicated teacher and looks forward to the positive impact she will have on her students and the community.
