Miss Sullivan dreamed of being a teacher ever since she was a little girl and now her dream has come true as she begins her career as a new teacher at her alma mater, Wyoming Valley West. She is one of the new Autistic Support teachers at the high school.
“I love being back at my alma mater. I always thought I would like to teach younger kids, but now I love working with the older students, ” Miss Sullivan said.
Her class is made up of students grades 10th through 12th who have different levels of Autism. The classroom consists of six students who focus on learning independent, daily living skills such as setting the table.
“We focus on matching socks, setting tableware and any other daily living skills that the students will need to know for independence,” Miss Sullivan said.
Although there are some struggles when it comes to teaching Autistic Support, such as not being able to combine with other classes or dealing with challenging behaviors, Miss Sullivan, her aide and her students’ nurse are doing an excellent job of balancing whatever the day brings.
Miss Sullivan was an excellent student and field hockey player for WVW and now she will be an excellent teacher for the years to come.
